08 / THE ROSTER

Three profiles, not forty

A character library is only useful if you have a way through it. This page is the method: what to read, what to ignore, and how to stop browsing before the evening is gone.

Sort by dynamic

The roster is wide enough that scrolling it is not a strategy. Decide first what kind of exchange you want — someone who leads, someone who waits, someone who teases — and the library shrinks immediately, because that single axis cuts across hair colour, age range and rendering style alike. It is the same axis described on the temperament page, and it applies equally to an AI boyfriend and to an illustrated character.

What a profile tells you

Read two fields and skip the rest. The temperament tells you the register: how long replies run, who opens a subject, how much is volunteered unasked. The interests tell you what the companion reaches for when the conversation flags — gaming, music, travel, whatever is listed — and that is the difference between a thread that survives a fortnight and one that dies on day three. Everything else on a profile is appearance, and appearance is reproducible later: the image generator renders whatever you describe, so a face you like is not a reason to accept a register you do not.

Cutting to three

Shortlist three and open all three. Send each the same opening line — a place, a time of day, one question — and compare the replies rather than the pictures. Unlimited texting on every paid plan means this costs nothing but ten minutes, and it answers the one question a profile card cannot. Long-term memory then does the rest: whichever of the three you keep talking to accumulates the history, the references and the running jokes, and by the second week that accumulated context matters far more than the choice you agonised over at the start. The reader verdicts on the home page repeat the point in their own words.

When to build instead

Build from scratch once you know what you are aiming for, not before. The builder covers ethnicity, age, hairstyle, eye colour, body type, voice, hobbies and occupation, and the overview walks through what each field controls. Picking first and building second is simply faster, because a prebuilt profile shows you a working combination you can then adjust. Plans run $13.99 monthly, $26.97 quarterly and $47.88 yearly, and each includes 100 tokens a month.

Asked often

Should I pick a character or build one?

Pick first. A written personality tells you in ten minutes what a settings panel cannot, and the temperament page explains why.

What should I actually read in a profile?

Temperament and interests. Appearance is reproducible later through the image generator, including illustrated styles.

Can I keep more than one companion going?

Yes — each thread keeps its own history, and the plan applies to the account.

Do I need to pay to look at the roster?

Signing up is how you reach the library; unlimited texting and tokens come with a paid plan.
